With 25 years of experience in Washington courts, Josh Schaer has dedicated his career to equity, accountability, and justice. The King County Bar Association, Joint Asian Judicial Evaluation Committee, Latino/a Bar Association of Washington, and QLaw have each given him the highest rating of “Exceptionally Well Qualified” to serve our Eastside communities as a King County District Court Judge.

Josh’s path to public service began with resilience. When his family relocated from New Mexico to Washington in 1988, a devastating fire destroyed nearly all they owned. That experience taught him the value of social services and the importance of community support in times of hardship.
After graduating from Bellevue College and the University of Washington, Josh built a life centered on community service. His career has spanned from public defense to civil practice to service as a Judge Pro Tem in King County courts. Josh currently works as an Assistant Attorney General and appellate advisor at the Washington State Attorney General’s Office.
Outside the courtroom, Josh served eight years on the Issaquah City Council, taught ten years of Sunday School, and volunteered as a coach with the Skyline High School mock trial team. Josh is also a proud Kiwanian, professional mentor, and devoted soccer dad.
There are many ways to improve access to the justice system, but we must push further: the next step is to achieve justice.
Having represented clients in criminal and civil matters at public and private sector firms, Josh knows the law on all types of cases that are heard in King County District Court.
Josh understands the necessity of fairness and respect in the courtroom. Every case is important and every person deserves to be treated with dignity.
